UNN AGM 2007- Youth Empowerment and Regeneration

UNN Provincial Aboriginal Youth Governance

For Immediate Release
UNN held its 38th AGM in Smithers, BC on July 21-22 2007.  Preceding the AGM, 17 youth actively participated in a summit that included workshops that were developed to enhance participation, and build leadership skills.  The youth were extremely enthusiastic, demonstrating outstanding involvement and interest in all of the business at the AGM. Overall, we had great feedback from everyone, the youth were highlighted for always asking intelligent questions, and applauded for bringing forward resolutions that build strength while enhancing the theme of Empowerment and Regeneration.

This year’s youth summit provided youth with a final report from the coordinators outlining the efforts of the past year, as well as updates on the status of activities, such as saving the Native Education College initiative and continuing engagement with Unified Aboriginal Youth Collective (UAYC).  This collective of six provincial Aboriginal youth organizations, works together on issues affecting on-reserve, off-reserve, status, non-status and Métis youth. One success of this collective’s work is the Aboriginal Youth Internship Program that was launched and supported by the Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation.

I am sure the Leaders present at the AGM heard the youth’s interests loud and clear…We are looking forward to another year of youth driven initiatives…See you all at the upcoming regional, and provincial meetings throughout the year. I know we’ll be able to bring together a bigger group for next year’s AGM in Kelowna…Get involved in your community, Use your voice, and be heard…
