Through negotiations with the Ministry of Community Services, the President of the United Native Nations was successful in securing support to develop regional roundtables discussing current issues of Aboriginal women.
UNN received funding to organise four regional Aboriginal women’s roundtables in partnership with Pacific Association of First Nations Women. These roundtables gathered information for the National Aboriginal Women’s Summit, June 20-22 at Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador and were held in May and June in Victoria (Songhees Nations), Vancouver, Prince George and Kamloops. The ensuing Final Report includes six recommendations, such as the establishment of a BC Aboriginal Women’s Council.
UNN will help to organise the development of a Women’s Council that represents all Aboriginal women in the province. Roundtable participants and other interested Aboriginal women will be invited to a meeting to develop of the mandate, terms of reference and composition of the Council.
