IDEA: UNN advocate for Spirit of the Children Society

WHEREAS Spirit of the Children Society is a newly incorporated agency registered under the Societies Act of BC and in good standing

WHEREAS Spirit of the Children Society is designated and contracted by MCFD to provide family strengthening and support services to Aboriginal families in the Tri Cities, New Westminster and Burnaby

WHEREAS the UNN is founded on the slogan “Working Together for Our Children”

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT UNN advocate for SOTCS to become a signatory, as a service provider, to the Tsawwassen Accord MOU, which is being renewed September 2007 or soon thereafter.

Resolution #2007-5

ISSUE: youth representation and participation in UNN Board meetings

WHEREAS UNN membership has expressed interest in youth participation in the governance of UNN;

WHEREAS youth make up over 60% of the Aboriginal population in BC

WHEREAS through the UNN youth initiative there have been regional and provincial discussions and consultations with Aboriginal youth from across the province that have stressed the importance of youth representation on the UNN board

WHEREAS the UNN constitution does not currently allow for youth participation as Board members; 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT a Committee of the UNN Board be created made up of the Executive of the Provincial Youth Round Table, including two youth members with gender balance; and

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED THAT the UNN Board consider establishing two Youth Board member positions with gender balance and voting privileges in the future, and

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED THAT the UNN Constitution be amended accordingly.

IDEA: Location of next AGM

WHEREAS a location for the 39th Annual General Meeting has not been determined by the UNN membership

WHEREAS It is important to host the 39th Annual General Meeting in a location that is in Central BC to allow equal travel distances for member living in the furthers parts of the province

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the 39th Annual General Meeting will be held in the city of Kelowna, British Columbia in 2008.

Resolution #2007-3

IDEA:  quantify membership

WHEREAS the current United Native Nation’s Provincial Membership list is in need of being updated as a result of there being no requirement for members to renew their membership cards which will update their residency information

WHEREAS the only place that an individual can sign up to be a member of the Provincial United Native Nations Society is at the Provincial Head Office located in Vancouver, British Columbia and/or at an Annual General Meeting

WHEREAS the membership of the Provincial United Native Nations Society is the basis of the Society

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the United Native Nations Society is to ensure that the following tasks are implement by the 39th United Native Nations Annual General Assembly:
• Update current UNN membership information in each zone
• Increase UNN provincial membership sign up in each zone
• Implement the UNN Membership computer technology and software at identified locations in each Zone to regionalize and increase the access to interested individuals who reside in that zone to sign up for UNN Provincial membership.

IDEA: to have the UNN distribute Status Cards

WHEREAS United Native Nations (UNN) members frequently request status cards from the UNN provincial office and are directed to other organizations or to the INAC office
 
WHEREAS UNN head office has a staff member who is certified to administer status cards

WHEREAS there is funding available for organizations to distribute Status Cards from INAC

Therefore be it resolved that the United Native Nations Executive seek information by the next UNN Board meeting about the procedure to distribute status cards to UNN members wishing to apply for such cards

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT information be shared with zones and locals to enable them to distribute Status Cards.
